Community Education and Involvement
The Carol Stream Park District is committed to being environmentally responsible. Green initiatives by the park district include:
The district hosts environmental education programs and events each season. Since Summer of 2009, more than 40 programs and events have been run with over 300 participants. The district partners with Bartlett Nature Center to offer programs at the Pate Philip State Park. Examples are “Mom & Son Night on the Prairie, Nature Detectives Camp, and “What’s With Composting and Rain Barrels?”.
In July, park district staff will be painting stenciled messages near storm drains and passing out information on watershed protection throughout the community. This project is in cooperation with The Conservation Foundation and the Village of Carol Stream.
Annual Earth Day Armstrong Park Cleanup – This free event invites everyone to help spruce up Armstrong Park. Attendance is typically over 100 people.
Annual Earth Day Community Park Cleanup - Village of Carol Stream and Comcast staff volunteer with us for the annual cleanup at Community Park. This park is owned and operated by a partnership between the district, the village and two other park districts.
Blue Heron Park, neighboring a restored wetland, has a wildlife education theme. The park features a gazebo to allow visitors to catch a glimpse of the several endangered and threatened species of birds that live in or visit the area. Educational signage informs park patrons about wetlands and the animals that live there. The wetlands are home to the endangered pie-billed grebe and the yellow-throated blackbird. Blue herons and egrets, both of which are on the threatened list, also frequent the wetlands. Many other birds and wildlife utilize the area as a source of food or shelter.
We're proud to be members and active partners of the DuPage River Leadership Council, Carol Stream Cool Cities Coalition, The Conservation Foundation, and Illinois Renewable Energy Association.
