Recreation Center – May 2012 Update

In less than one week the construction site at Carol Stream Town Center has transformed from foundations to four walls, with the new recreation center being to take shape.

The pre-fabricated concrete walls are 12 feet wide, over 40 feet tall, and weigh several tons each. These walls create the structure that will become the new gymnasium.

Construction of the new recreation center remains on track. Crews have begun installation of the geothermal heating/cooling system by digging holes for pipes. The foundations are also being constructed and in April passers-by are likely to see walls going up.

The new look McCaslin Park, featuring four baseball diamonds, all with all-weather baseball infields; is ahead of schedule, and will be ready to use this summer.

The improvements are currently around 80% complete and are expected to be fully complete by the end of May. 11 of 18 light poles are in place, backs stops and fencing are currently being erected; the concession stand has been constructed and work on the astroturf infields has begun. The new trails and access driveway to Morton Road are also currently under construction.

Board Members Attend Aldrin Brick Breaking Ceremony

Board Members Attend Aldrin Brick Breaking Ceremony

Park District board members joined village and county officials on Thursday, Feb 16, for a Brick Breaking Ceremony at Armstrong Park. The event marked the official start of DuPage County’s Klein Creek Stormwater Management Plan, which will help reduce flooding in Armstrong Park.

Brenda Gramman, Park District Board President, joined DuPage County Board Member Jim Zay, Carol Stream Mayor Frank Savarino, Elmhurst Mayor Peter DiCianni, and Carol Stream resident Lisa Wilson – who has been affected by the flooding, for a ceremonial brick breaking at Aldrin Community Center. The building will be demolished in early March and work on a stormwater retention reservoir will begin in the fall.

Work is underway on the new recreation center at Carol Stream Town Center. Riley Construction has completed the site survey and has now begun the initial work to install the geothermal heat/cooling system for the building. Eco-friendly features, such as the geothermal system, has also enabled the new recreation center to be eligible for a grant from the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation (ICECF).

Construction is progressing on the new McCaslin Park ballfields. Underdraining has been installed and sodding has been laid for all the ballfields and a heated, winter protection tent has now been erected to allow work to continue on the concession building over the winter months. Construction of the concession building is expected to be complete by April 2012.

Farewell to Aldrin Community Center

Over 40 years of memories were made at the Aldrin Community Center and Collins Pool, and on Jan 15 over 200 Carol Stream residents said goodbye to the building at a farewell event. Visitors were able to see items and photos from throughout the 40 year history of the center, as well as write farewell messages on the walls and sign a guestbook.

The center will be demolished in early 2012 as part of DuPage County’s stormwater management plan for Armstrong Park.

Park District board meetings will take place at the College of DuPage, 500 N. Kuhn Road, Carol Stream during January.

Recreation Center Groundbreaking

The Carol Stream Board Park District of Commissioners hosted a ground breaking celebration for the new recreation center at Town Center on Monday, Oct 24 at 6pm.

The ceremony on Monday celebrated the start of construction on the new $18m center, which will feature a 25 yard indoor pool, new fitness center, indoor running track and gymnasium with three basketball courts. Construction is expected to take 16-18 months.
