Recreation Center October 2010 Update

The park district board have voted to pursue LEED certification for the new building. LEED, which rates buildings in areas such as recycling, energy efficiancy and indoor air quality is the nation’s top green certification program.

“This will be no additional cost to the Park District or taxpayers to ensure we have a sustainable building that’s both energy-efficient and more user-friendly,” Carol Stream Park District Board Vice President Tim Powers said.

Achieving LEED certification will also open the door to thousands of dollars in green grants.

What’s Happening With the Referendum Approved Park Projects?

Dirt’s not flying yet, but there is a ton of action going on behind the scenes.

Since February 3, the park district board and staff have been hustling to get all the voter-approved referendum projects up and going. Right now, we have designs in various stages for the recreation center, dog park, three playgrounds, Armstrong Park, McCaslin Park; and, trail connections from O’Rahilly Park on Kuhn Road, under North avenue, through Red Hawk Park and over to the Great Western Trail of the Illinois Prairie Path.

At anytime you wish to know about where the projects are and where they are headed, just go to csparks.org/referendum. You’ll find an easy to read and understand of the progress and description of each project. Important dates and milestones are listed, and a map shows the location of the project, just in case you’re not sure.

We’d all like to see everything built and open next week, but it just doesn’t work that way. During all of the public input sessions, one message was clear. Residents want to see proper planning, careful preparation, and, “things done right”. That’s what’s going on as we have created a detailed and methodical approach to getting each park improvement “done right”.

With each project, we do our best to invite neighbors, local experts, and interested citizens to put in their two cents. There are many, many who have obliged and we want to thank each of them. Nothing helps more with a park or building design than having the end users contribute to the process. We are lucking in our Park District to have so many who are willing to take time from their busy lives to pitch in. Again, thanks to each of you!

While you are waiting to see all of the great things for the community’s park system, take time for a little recreation. Fall classes are starting soon, with many new activities and programs for adults, kids and families. Enjoy a few this fall.

Parks & Trails – August 2010 Update

We are now working on design drawings for a trail link that will connect Volunteer Park to the underpass that leads to Red Hawk Park. This trail will be just east of the new dog park. We will soon be able to bike to Red Hawk without having to cross North Ave!

This fall, we will go to bid for the first wave of tree replacements. We are still losing trees to the emerald ash borer and from age. The plan is to plant two trees for each lost tree (dead or removed).

McCaslin Park – August 2010 Update

The designs for the renovation of McCaslin are being revised using input we received from park district staff, Board Members and residents.

Armstrong Park – August 2010 Update

The design for the renovation of Armstrong Park is being revised using input we received from park district staff, Board Members and residents. We are currently waiting on a decision from the county to see if that area will be part of their county-wide storm water management project. The decision will make a big difference in the design of Armstrong Park.

Dog Park – August 2010 Update

Rec staff continues to gather information from other dog parks. We met with interested dog owners on August 5 to collect their thoughts on features and how the park will operate. Our engineering firm is now working on the land surveys we need to start designing the park. We’ve done some clearing and seeding. The site for this park is a 20 acre parcel just northwest of Kuhn and North Ave. (just south of our new maintenance garage).

Recreation Center August 2010 Update

Architects are currently working on rough floor plans for the new recreation center. The board will review these at the August 23 board meeting. Citizens and staff will also be able to see them and give their feedback for revisions. Once we are happy with the rough layouts, the architects will use them to draft the actual blueprints.

We’re committed to making this building as energy efficient as possible and have been researching green building techniques and grants.

Parks & Trails – July 2010 Update

Trail expansion projects will include a trail to connect O’Rahilly Park to Red Hawk Park, which will go to bid in the fall, and a trail to connect Red Hawk Park to the Great Western Trail, south of St.Charles Rd.

McCaslin Park – July 2010 Update

A draft master plan was developed for McCaslin Park and presented to staff and sports users for comment. The overall plan is to add more sports fields to this park and re-configure the current ballfields to have a central hub. Artificial turf is being considered to allow more games and reduce maintenance costs. This is a large project and planning will take several months before a final design is developed.

Armstrong Park – July 2010 Update

The park district is currently looking into partnering with the county to install a regional detention facility to alleviate drainage concerns for the area and community.

Under a masterplan, currently being created, sports fields will be re-engineered to reduce flooding. Currently, they frequently flood – resulting in loss of playability and excessive repairs.
